SAND LAke TOWN LIbrary MURAL

Mural | 2024

Sand Lake Town Library, Averill Park, NY

Spanning 74 feet in length and standing 12 feet tall, the Sand Lake Town Library Mural is the culmination of a six-month community engagement project that brought together over 100 community members of all ages. This vibrant mural now graces the library, often celebrated as a hidden gem located behind the Sand Lake Town Hall.

The Library Board of Trustees initiated the project by reaching out to the Mural Team, featuring Frida Foberg, a community artist/architect from Arts Letters & Numbers, a local arts and education non-profit; Kayla Jolin, a community artist from Troy; and Ira Baumgarten, a dedicated community volunteer.

At the beginning of the year, the Mural Team collected ideas from 63 patrons who shared their thoughts on "What does the library mean to you?" In April, 25 community members attended a workshop where the Mural Team captured key concepts and visuals. The team then introduced narrative, color, and visual representations to develop a cohesive reflection of the library’s meaning within the community. Following this workshop, the team worked closely with the Library Board to finalize the design.

In June, 49 community members, including students from local elementary, middle, and high schools, along with patrons of the library, came together to paint the mural with guidance from the Mural Team.
